What is an Organogram?
An Organogram is also known as organizational chart that contains an internal structure of an organization. It tells about different levels and elements of an organization with which it is composed of. Its design includes different rules and policies that indicate;
- What are the roles and responsibilities
- Whom they are assigned to and who control them
- A proper arrangement about the relationship between individuals
- The connection of one department to another
- Supervisor and the subordinates
Organograms contain different boxes and circles that show different levels, departments, officials, etc. With the help of Organogram, the newcomers understand the workflow of company, who is in charge of what section and who is accountable to whom. So, an effective organogram is critically important for the success of an organization.
Different types of Organograms:
There are many types of organograms. They are designed for different type of organizations for different purposes. An organizational structure is basically created in two ways;
• A functional structure:
It is a type of organogram that separates the whole organization into small sectors.
• A divisional structure:
It is the further division of each small organogram into its specific parts or functions.
However, the three main types of organogram structures are;
1. Hierarchy tree structure:
In the hierarchy tree structure, a layout is displayed that represent all parts in subordination of one entity that is head towards them. It is usually of tree or pyramid shape in which entities indicate their authorities over the one present below it. The entities that are at higher level supposed to exercise more power, authority and reward as compared to those that descend down to bottom. Usually, large organizations, governments, etc use this type of organogram because they have different levels of authority and management.
2. Flat or horizontal structure:
This type of organogram is used by the small or newly started organizations. They use it because they don’t have to report relationships. They just have to assign goals that are supposed to be achieved. When organizations grow larger then they can adopt different organizational structures. However, larger organizations with multilayer managements and projects can’t use this type of organogram. It consists of only two levels i.e. the top authority and the lower workforce. At the top, there is higher authority and the lateral relationships are indicated by connecting with lines showing all of them at the same level. Also, there is a close relationship between the top authority and the lower workforce because it cuts down all the layers of management.
3. Matrix structure:
This structure is quite different as compared to hierarchal and horizontal or flat type of structure. It has a grid like structure. There are various teams that perform different functions and produce different end products. Each team is assigned a certain task to achieve. So, on the work force, there is a multi-layered management. Matrix structures are used by the organizations that assigned specialized roles to individual teams of organization but still they have reporting connection with higher authorities.
The benefits of organogram:
- It clearly indicates the outline of an organization.
- Highlights link between different departments. This helps is determining the desirable person of one department who is helpful in a certain situation by another department.
- New employees connect with the already existing group.
- Better future planning.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, an organogram template is an absolute reflection of an organization. It states how the various parts of an organization are related to each other. To face unique challenges and situations, different types of organograms are adopted by the executives of the organization.
